Antagonist · Vrakhir Boyar of the North

Ambrus

Ambrus is Brencis's youngest vrakhir boyar, a flamboyant ruler who controls northern Vale Sangora and the court's human-blood supply. Sabotaging that system leads Coen to his staged duel in The Gilded Gauntlet.

Overview

Ambrus governs northern Vale Sangora as the youngest of Brencis's three vrakhir boyars. His portfolio is the machinery that feeds the court: prisoners are bled, shipments are guarded, leeches preserve the supply, and fortified cellars hold the product until the regime needs it.

He presents that exploitation with gilded armor, charm, and theatrical confidence. Official material emphasizes the contradiction between his fondness for human company and his readiness to use humans as subjects and food. Beneath the spectacle is a recently turned vampire eager to prove that Brencis chose well.

Story & Transformation

Ambrus rose from difficult human circumstances rather than ancient privilege. Release-build records place him among Skender Dragosti's mercenaries before Brencis's takeover. After torture left him dying in a dungeon, Brencis offered the power of vampirism in exchange for unquestioned loyalty.

That bargain explains both his devotion and his insecurity. Unlike the older members of the court, Ambrus has little history as a vrakhir to rely on. He compensates with polish, cruelty, and public spectacle, using control of the blood network to demonstrate that he can sustain the regime as effectively as he can entertain it.

Blood Network & Duel Mechanics

Coen weakens Ambrus by attacking the northern system rather than simply searching for the boyar. Prison sites, transports, cellars, and leech operations contribute to his anger until he answers the sabotage with a formal challenge above Maragir. The route makes logistics part of the boss design.

During The Gilded Gauntlet, Ambrus relies on fast weapon pressure and Scarlet Shield. Striking carelessly while the shield is active can restore his health, so reading the state of the duel matters more than constant aggression. The encounter also supports preparation choices that can change the difficulty before the bell is rung.

Brencis, Humanity & Coen's Choice

Brencis is both Ambrus's sire and the patron who rescued him from a powerless death. That history turns loyalty into identity: opposing the Knyaz would mean rejecting the source of Ambrus's new status. His preference for human audiences never becomes solidarity with the people his supply chain consumes.

Defeating Ambrus creates a further decision for Coen. Killing him removes one of Brencis's boyars, while draining him can unlock Scarlet Shield and lead to a separate question about accepting part of his soul. The branch tests whether using an enemy's power is liberation from the court or another form of entanglement with it.
