NPC · Coen's Mother

Esme

Esme is Coen's mother and an emotional anchor of the Laslea household. Her timed medicine sequence creates one of the story's earliest permanent consequences, while her survival determines whether she joins the captive family Coen must rescue.

Overview

Esme is Coen's mother and part of the peasant household in the hills of Laslea. Official family history remembers her as someone who routinely put the needs of her children before her own, making her later withdrawal from food, sleep, speech, and daily family life especially visible.

Her early quest is deliberately domestic rather than heroic. Coen must notice that ordinary care is failing, ask Anca for stronger herbs, prepare the remedy correctly, and act before the Blood Mass. Missing that window or mishandling the medicine can make Esme's death a permanent part of the story.

Story & Declining Health

Esme's condition follows a series of losses: Alin's death, the plague, and the vrakhiri takeover. Coen remembers a warmer and more active mother, but the woman he meets during the prologue barely eats or responds. The game avoids reducing that decline to a combat curse and instead makes care, attention, and time the relevant mechanics.

Withering Away begins around the family breakfast and leads Coen to Anca for medicinal herbs. Preparing them with hot water and the correct amount, then administering the remedy before Sacred Covenant, lets Esme survive the immediate culling. If she lives, Brencis's forces capture her with the rest of the family after Laslea burns.

Medicine Sequence & Gameplay Function

Esme is not a combatant, companion, or boss. Her gameplay function is to teach that small household decisions can have the same permanence as battlefield choices. The quest asks the player to read instructions, measure ingredients, and respect a deadline rather than win a fight.

Anca supplies the expertise, but Coen remains responsible for execution. Hot water and three spoonfuls are the reliable preparation identified by launch walkthroughs. The earlier force-feed decision is not a substitute for the medicine, so players should treat the herbal remedy and its timing as the actual survival gate.

Coen, Anca & The Captive Family

Esme's relationship with Coen is expressed through care under pressure. He cannot solve everything that has happened to her, but the medicine route gives him one concrete opportunity to keep his mother alive. That outcome changes who is present in the family-rescue stakes that follow the prologue.

Anca becomes essential because her herbal knowledge offers a treatment the household lacks. Lunka's crisis is separate: Brencis heals Lunka with vampire blood, while Esme needs Anca's remedy. Keeping those stories distinct clarifies why Coen depends on human relationships and practical knowledge even after gaining supernatural power.

Frequently asked questions

How do you save Esme?

Complete Withering Away before Sacred Covenant, prepare Anca's herbs with hot water and three spoonfuls, and give the finished medicine to Esme.

Does force-feeding Esme save her?

No. That dialogue choice does not replace the herbal remedy. Correct medicine delivered before the Blood Mass is the important survival condition.

Is Esme a companion or boss?

No. Esme is a noncombat family character whose health, survival, and captivity shape Coen's personal story.
